Summer Reading Assessments for Grades 1-12

~ Scroll down for your grade level ~

The purpose of assessing the summer reading is to encourage and reward students, to make students think about what they are reading, and to help facilitate follow up discussions and activities in September.

See assessment descriptions below for each grade level:

1.  For students entering grades 1-3:

Students entering grades 1st-3rd should read regularly throughout the summer months.  There is no set amount of books they should read.  A suggested list of titles is available on this website

You and your child should fill out the reading log each time you read, which can be accessed by clicking on the link below. The reading log will be collected by your child’s teacher in September.  Students will also share their summer reading experiences in class discussions and/or fun class activities within the first few weeks of school.  For younger children or struggling readers, parents should offer support and assistance by reading with the child and helping him or her complete the reading log.

4.  For students entering 9th-12th:

Students entering 9th-12th grade are required to read two books.  They may choose two books from their grade list or one from their grade list and one of their own choosing (this second choice must not be a movie and must be age appropriate).  High school students are required to complete a reading log for each book read, which will be handed into their English teacher in September and count as a quiz grade.  In addition, the students will also complete a short answer assessment in September and may participate in class discussions and/or activities about their summer reading books.
